The Guardian in the UK has put together quite the list, which looks at the top borrowed library books for all of 2010. In addition they have a try at explaining the reasons why some books do better than others, such as UKers liking American crime and thrillers over their European counterparts. The article however, goes a bit off in it’s description of The Twilight Saga as “crime-laden vampire romances”! Read more below:

Trying to explain why the wartime British public were turning to “brutal and sordid” American crime novels, George Orwell suggested that pulp fiction offered “a distilled version of the modern political scene” in an era of “mass bombing of civilians, the use of hostages, torture [and] secret prisons”, and “systematic falsification of records and statistics”. The average man, he proposed, “wants the current troubles of the world to be translated into a simple story about individuals”.

Some such theory is needed, 65 years later, to account for the stunning appetite for evil evinced by people popping into their local libraries, as revealed again by the latest data released by Public Lending Right (PLR), covering the period from mid-2009 to mid-2010. Of the 100 most borrowed titles, close to two-thirds are crime novels or thrillers, including all the top 10, and others (such as Stephenie Meyer’s crime-laden vampire romances) are in related genres.

Yay, hear it from dad! Robert Pattinson’s dad in Twilight says Taylor Lautner should always be shirt-less!

Peter Facinelli, who plays Rob’s dad in the Twilight series, said Lautner should always flash his six-pack whenever he could.

Why? “He worked really hard for those!” said Facinelli at the Father’s Day/Khaki’s Make the Man fundraiser in NYC Thursday.

He added, “I don’t think he should hide them. If I had that six-pack, I would never wear a shirt!”

Facinelli also talked about Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, who’s being rumored to be having a romance off-screen. Both have neither denied nor confirmed their real relationship. But recent reports say Pattinson is taking a step back from Stewart because she’s been saying some crazy things lately, like when she said that being famous is like being raped.

“I think it’s great if they’re happy! I feel like when you watch them on screen, their chemistry always works,” he said.

The dark comedy was the most-watched new series in Showtime’s history when it debuted last year. It airs Mondays at 10 p.m.

“I’m a fan of the show. I love watching these characters and how they all interact,” Facinelli said.

Edie Falco stars as Nurse Jackie Peyton, a drug addict who is both unethical on the job and in her marriage. Facinelli’s character, a young, Ivy League-educated “know-it-all,” is somewhat smitten with his co-worker.

“He’s kind of like the kid in third grade who has a crush on somebody, but it’s not being reciprocated, so he’s constantly pulling on her pigtails trying to get a reaction out of her,” he said.

Facinelli, who plays the patriarch vampire clan leader Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the “Twilight” series, returns with the third installment, “Eclipse,” out June 30. Facinelli says “Eclipse” will be more action-based and will feature the Cullens in a different light.

We had the chance to chat with Peter Facinelli at Sunday’s Milk & Bookies fundraiser, where he blabbed about Robsten‘s on-set presence. He may have been vague about Twilight‘s true love story, but he did dish some deets about Breaking Dawn, Eclipse and whether his kiddies have read the Twilight series.

The Cullen family papa attended the event with his wife, Jennie Garth, and three daughters in tow, but, despite recently dropping the bomb that she’s leaving 90210, J.G. got to sit back while reporters bombarded her hottie hubby in a chaotic interview.

As Marc Malkin revealed in his latest video blog, Peter kept his lips zipped when it came to any news of splitting Breaking Dawn into two movies, shrugging it off by saying no scripts had been written yet.

“It’s a very thick book. I think that two movies would be a good thing for the franchise. I support it, but ultimately it’s up to what Summit decides,” Peter chatted, though he seemed to pick his words very carefully.

“The fanbase has been so phenomenal. When you go to an event, people have flown in from other countries just to take a picture with you,” he said.

“That is a loyal fanbase that you can’t even imagine having. I am thankful for all of them. That is why I try to give back in connecting with them.”

When asked if he has any information on the proposed fourth instalment Breaking Dawn, he replied: “I don’t know. Usually the fans know before I do.”
