Peter Facinelli, who plays Coop, likens his character to “a puppy in a room full of people who don’t like dogs.” Though Coop is for sure a doofus, Facinelli says he never plays the part for laughs. Instead, he says, “the more dramatic I try to be, the funnier it is.”

When Sam discovers that Coop slept with his girlfriend, the not-so-good doctor compounds the deception by telling Sam she’d rather be with a doctor than a nurse anyway. This news all but obliterates their nascent friendship (which spawned this awesome/awful rap) and leaves both men in a fragile state by the episode’s end.

“He tries so hard to fit in, and he really wants people to like him, and he wants to believe that people do, but there’s always a part of him that goes home and cries himself to sleep,” Facinelli says.

The dark comedy was the most-watched new series in Showtime’s history when it debuted last year. It airs Mondays at 10 p.m.

“I’m a fan of the show. I love watching these characters and how they all interact,” Facinelli said.

Edie Falco stars as Nurse Jackie Peyton, a drug addict who is both unethical on the job and in her marriage. Facinelli’s character, a young, Ivy League-educated “know-it-all,” is somewhat smitten with his co-worker.

“He’s kind of like the kid in third grade who has a crush on somebody, but it’s not being reciprocated, so he’s constantly pulling on her pigtails trying to get a reaction out of her,” he said.

Facinelli, who plays the patriarch vampire clan leader Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the “Twilight” series, returns with the third installment, “Eclipse,” out June 30. Facinelli says “Eclipse” will be more action-based and will feature the Cullens in a different light.

“I started venting, and all of a sudden, tears sprung from my eyes and I couldn’t stop crying,” he admits to us. “Basically, I had a physical meltdown.”

Holy shift, indeed. Looks like tonight’s season premiere of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie will have us reaching for the Kleenex. We just met up with the whole cast and we’re hearing of more drama, more comedy and more consequences that come from Jackie’s (Edie Falco) double life.

Peter, who plays Dr. Fitch “Coop” Cooper, is describing a great scene with him and Akalitus (Anna Deavere Smith) in the first episode of season two, airing tonight. Yep, Coop becomes a blubbering mess. And he wasn’t originally supposed to cry in the script!
